Sunrise Circle Amphitheater Wedding Guide

Sunrise Amphitheater, perched atop Flagstaff Mountain in Boulder, Colorado, offers a breathtaking setting for couples seeking a memorable outdoor wedding. With panoramic views of the Boulder Valley and a rustic stone amphitheater nestled among towering pine trees, it's a venue that combines natural beauty with historic charm.

Location and Accessibility

Just a 10-minute drive from downtown Boulder, Sunrise Amphitheater is easily accessible yet feels worlds away. The amphitheater features a wheelchair-accessible trail and steps leading directly into the main circle, ensuring convenience for all guests. Parking is available nearby, though it's advisable to consider carpooling or arranging shuttles for larger groups, as parking spaces are not guaranteed.

Capacity and Amenities

The amphitheater can accommodate up to 100 guests on its semi-circular stone benches, making it suitable for both intimate ceremonies and larger gatherings. However, it's important to note that there are no on-site structures for preparations, so couples should plan to arrive ready or set up a temporary space nearby. Additionally, there is no power supply at the venue, so any sound equipment must be battery-operated.

Booking and Availability

Sunrise Amphitheater is available for reservations from May 1st to October 31st each year. Reservations can be made up to two years in advance through the City of Boulder's Open Space & Mountain Parks website. Rental fees are as follows:

  • 1-Hour Slots (6:00 am – 7:00 am, 7:00 am – 8:00 am, 8:00 am – 9:00 am): $100 for residents, $150 for non-residents.

  • 3-Hour Slots (10:00 am – 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm): $300 for residents, $400 for non-residents.

Best Times for Ceremonies

  • Morning (6:00 am – 9:00 am): Ideal for sunrise ceremonies with magical lighting and minimal tourist activity. However, early hours may be chilly, and setup time is limited.

  • Midday (10:00 am – 1:00 pm): Suitable for brunch or early afternoon receptions. Be prepared for potential heat and direct sunlight; providing water and sunscreen for guests is recommended.

  • Afternoon (2:00 pm – 5:00 pm): Offers warmer temperatures but comes with a higher chance of afternoon thunderstorms, especially in summer.

  • Evening (6:00 pm – 9:00 pm): Provides cooler temperatures and the possibility of sunset views. Lighting can be variable due to the setting sun filtering through the trees.

Photography Opportunities

The amphitheater itself provides a stunning backdrop for wedding photos. Additionally, nearby locations such as Artist Point, Lost Gulch Overlook, and Chautauqua Park offer diverse scenic vistas for memorable wedding photography.

Reception Venues

While Sunrise Amphitheater is exclusively a ceremony site, Boulder boasts several reception venues to continue the celebration:

  • Rembrandt Yard: An art gallery in downtown Boulder offering a modern indoor space with mountain views.

  • Flagstaff House: A fine dining restaurant near the amphitheater, renowned for its cuisine and extensive wine list.

  • Chautauqua Dining Hall: Offers historic charm and views of the Flatirons, suitable for both intimate and larger gatherings.

Additional Considerations

  • Weather: Be prepared for variable mountain weather. Consider having a backup plan or renting tents for unexpected changes.

  • Amenities: There are no restroom facilities directly at the amphitheater; the nearest restrooms are a short drive away.

  • Permits: Ensure all necessary permits are secured, especially if planning to bring in external equipment or decorations.

Sunrise Amphitheater offers a unique blend of natural beauty and accessibility, making it a sought-after venue for couples desiring a memorable outdoor wedding experience in Boulder.
